The Basic Concepts of Memory and Ways to Improve Memory

Posted by admin on 17 November 2008

We’ve all forgotten our wallets in a restaurant or a much needed item off of our grocery list, and many of us lament about our bad memory and never do anything to make it better. Your memory, however, is something that you can make better. Before you can look at ways to improve memory, however, it is important to learn exactly how memory works.

The Basics

Memory is an electrochemical process that is in the brain. It allows you to store and retrieve specific information in your brain. It’s how you know what you got for your birthday when you were five, and how you remember what you just saw on your computer screen a few seconds ago.

There are two different types of basic memory:

· Short Term - Short term memory allows you to remember things for a few seconds or a few minutes. It is not meant to last in your brain for any longer than that.

· Long Term - Long term memory is the storage place for all of the information that you want to hold on to indefinitely. It is where you place things such as phone numbers or treasured memories.

The hippocampus is vital for taking in and remembering both short and long term memories. It is located in the brain and actually looks to transform the information that we see, hear, feel, touch, and taste, into electrons so that our brain can store it.

Bad Memory

Some people use their brains more often and have great memory skills. Others, however, have a hard time remembering anything. This is because the brain, like most of your body, is a muscle. It needs to be used in order to work properly. Imagine what your stomach would be like if you didn’t use it, or your leg muscles? They would atrophy and would be of no use to you. The brain is the same way. The more you use it, the better able you are to input and recall information, both in the short term and in the long term.

Ways to Improve Memory

There are a number of things that you can do to improve your memory. First of all, learn how to concentrate better. More than half of people who have memory problems have them because they are unable to concentrate or focus on the task at hand. Learning how to concentrate fully is a good way to teach your brain how to properly take in the information that you are trying to learn.

Another way to improve your memory is to use it! Playing memory games and doing memory activities are great ways to keep your brain active and help you have a better memory. There are tons of different activities and games you can play that will help your brain learn how to retain information better.

When it’s all said and done, the only person that you can blame for your memory deficiency (unless you have a medical issue) is yourself. Get out there and use your brain and you’ll find that you will be able to remember things much easier.
