All parents want their children to succeed in life, but many leave the majority of the education process to their child’s teachers and then get frustrated when their child comes home with low grades. They may, at first, blame the child, and then they may blame the teachers. The truth is that parents are very influential when it comes not only to helping their child learn, but also in helping their child learn how to learn!

Almost everyone has heard of short term and long term memory. Working memory, however, is a newer term that has not been adopted by everyone yet. In reality, however, we use working memory every day of our lives. We depend upon it to help us get through work or through our daily chores, and if working memory is lost, it is impossible to learn anything new.
What Is Working Memory?
Working memory is very similar to short term memory - it is defined as the ability to store and use the information that is added to the brain for a short amount of time. Think of it as a virtual desk in your brain. You are allowed to put information down on that desk so that you can use it for a short time, but like all desks, eventually it has to get cleaned off so that new information can be placed on the desk.

Now, more and more schools are using accelerated learning techniques in order to teach the children at the school the lessons they need to learn. On the hit television show Psyche on the USA Network, the lead “psychic” investigator is able to act like he is a psychic simply based on his powers of memory. He views a scene and, hours and days later, can recall even the smallest detail that was in the scene. Many people believe that having this type of a memory is something that you have to be born with. In the beginning of the show, however, you learn that the main character consciously developed his memory when he was very young to be as sharp as it is now.

You’ve studied for hours and believe you know all the information you need to ace the test. You take the test and leave thinking that you performed well. The minute the test comes back, however, you realize that you failed it miserably. How can you fail something when you studied for hours? Is it possible to learn how to pass tests easier?
